Solidarity Statement from MUA: Janet Napolitano Appointed President of UC

From Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA): As women, mothers, daughters, and students, we stand in solidarity with the DREAMers of the UC system and object to the appointment of Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, as President of the University of California. Secretary Napolitano has been the guiding force behind the immigration policies that have led to 1.5 million deportations during President Obama’s tenure. She will be remembered as the Secretary who brought Arizona’s repugnant policies to the rest of the country. Indeed, there is now little difference between remaining portions of Arizona’s SB 1070 and her Secure Communities deportation program.

Her appointment to run the CA public university system, which has been at the forefront of the movement towards equal access for undocumented students, comes as a slap in the face to all of the families that have been torn apart by the record-breaking number of deportations in the past several years, which are a direct result of Napolitano’s policies and attitudes towards our immigrant communities.

Our students deserve a President who will value and fight for their rights to be educated and unafraid, not one who deports them.
